Chalcopyrite on Dolomite Brushy Creek Mine, Reynolds County, MO
The Brushy Creek Mine is one of the largest and most famous mines in the Viburnum Trend Mining District, the largest galena deposit in the world. About a year ago they began encountering pockets that had some outstanding iridescent chalcopyrite specimens. For the most part the blues and dark purples in the photos look like they do in person, but the lighter purple to reddish-copper colored chalcopyrites all look darker. I've added a note for the latter, as these really look striking in person. Almost all of the smaller photos showing an overall view of the specimen link to pretty large photos of the specimens. These will take a bit longer to load than the other "thumbnails" but you'll be able to easily see the quality of the specimens. I'm not sure if it's due to the iridescence or the luster of the crystals, but none of the photos captured the true look of these specimens. They all look much better in person!
BC-1 Chalcopyrite - Brushy Creek Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri. $150; This is the best large specimen that the miner had. The color and aesthetics are great, and of the thousands of crystals present only a couple show damage. This is truly a museum quality specimen. 27 x 20 x 4 Reserved
BC-2 Chalcopyrite - Brushy Creek Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri. $25; Almost all of these crystals are the bright reddish-copper color. I can't think of another mineral to compare it to, and words just can't describe it. 10 x 6.5 x 6 Reserved
BC-3 Chalcopyrite - Brushy Creek Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri. $25; The color of these is mainly a lighter reddish-copper. The large crystal in the first two close-ups is 1 cm, and it's a compound crystal. 11 x 9 x 7 Reserved
BC-4 Chalcopyrite - Brushy Creek Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri. $40; This one runs the gambit of color from brassy to reddish-copper to purple to blue. 10 x 10 x 4 Reserved
BC-5 Chalcopyrite - Brushy Creek Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri. $35; The cluster toward the top in the first close-up is reddish-copper. 13 x 9 x 6 Reserved
BC-6 Chalcopyrite - Brushy Creek Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri. $40; This one has awesome color, and features three crystals that are over 1 cm. 13 x 6 x 2.5 Reserved
BC-7 Chalcopyrite - Brushy Creek Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri. $20; The lighter purple crystals are a little more reddish-copper looking in person. 12 x 9 x 5 Reserved
BC-8 Chalcopyrite - Brushy Creek Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri. $20; The reddish-copper colored crystals in the photos approach the real color. However, in person the color is a lot more intense, and the luster on this (and on all of the other specimens) is much better. 10.5 x 6 x 6 Reserved
BC-9 Chalcopyrite - Brushy Creek Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri. $35; Most of the crystals are light purple with a brassy undertone, but there are some intense purple and blue crystals present too. A larger crystal is dinged (visible as a brassy partial crystal just above the very bottom center tip of the specimen in the overall views), hence the lower price on this otherwise very impressive specimen. 14 x 13 x 6 Reserved
BC-10 Chalcopyrite - Brushy Creek Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri. $60; Almost all of these crystals are the bright reddish-copper color. The color of the crystals and the size of this specimen make it a real eye-catcher! 23 x 14 x 8
BC-11 Chalcopyrite - Brushy Creek Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri. $100; This large specimen runs the gambit of color from brassy to reddish-copper to purple to blue. Only a couple crystals out of the thousands present show rubbing. I think this is a superb specimen, second only to BC-1. 22 x 14 x 7 Reserved
