Copper & Cuprite

Grube Wolf, Herdorf, Germany

 

While this old mine is THE classic locale for European rhodochrosite specimens, it also produced an array of other minerals.    The mine is over 200 years old but you don't usually see a lot of specimens from there, especially since it's been closed since the 1960's.   I was very lucky to find this batch of crystallized coppers and cuprite.   The copper specimens all show well defined crystals (mainly variations of cubic or octahedral forms) that have a great green patina.   The cuprite specimen features deep red octahedral crystals, some with complex faces, and has good luster.   I'm not sure when these came out, but frankly I was amazed to see this many available at one time.   All of these are thumbnail sized.
