Pea Ridge Mine,

Washington County, Missouri

Pea Ridge Mine was once the largest operating underground iron mine in North America.   There is still a HUGE amount of iron (in the form of magnetite and hematite) in place, but it simply became uneconomical to extract the ore via an underground operation.   Specimens from this mine were never plentiful, and most have a thin coating of limonite, hematite or goethite.   At best the pockets were relatively small, and getting specimens out without minor rubbing was nearly impossible.   Most of the pockets that produced specimens were in the upper levels of the mine, and as such they came out in the mid to late 1960's to early 1970's.   Since the mine closed in 2001 good specimens have become very difficult to find.

The pieces I'm offering have been stashed away for years, and is without a doubt the largest selection you'll ever see available.   Some of the pieces have minor rubs or bruises typical for specimens from this mine, but as you can see from the photos the damage is very minimal.    As you look through the specimens note that almost all of the non-scalenohedral calcite crystals are complexly twinned!    In case you're looking for specimens of a certain size the first two pages mainly have cabinet to miniature sized pieces, while the last three pages are thumbnails and toenails.   See the page under the "Museums" icon for photos and more info on the mine.
